Professional Coaching Staff

The Mavericks Leadership Team build a training curriculum for each team, and hire only skilled and licensed coaches with extensive playing and coaching experience.
Mavericks protect the joyful experience of playing for all our players by enforcing a code conduct for coaches and parents to follow. We only encourage feedback to our players in the positive form.
Coaches at Mavericks love the game and have experience of playing at a high level from a young age. Mavericks Soccer Club provides all our professional coaching staff with financial support to allow them to improve their education and licensing. The club has numerous USSF A, B, and C licensed coaches on staff and all our coaches are encouraged to attend regional educational courses throughout the year to keep up to date with modern coaching techniques.

Matt is the clubs Executive Director, he previously served as the Director of Coaching for Mavericks for four years before stepping up as the Executive Director in 2019. Matt has over 12 years experience in coaching and player development in the Bay Area with previous roles including Technical Director and Player Development coach at Livermore Fusion Soccer Club, Youth Academy Director with Mission Valley United in Fremont and a Staff Coach with Peninsula Soccer Club. Before moving to the U.S. Matt coached in various professional youth academies and community soccer schools in the UK. Matt Currently has more than 15 years of youth coaching experience and holds coaching licenses from the English FA, KNVB, NSCAA, and USSF.

Alongside his coaching experience, Matt brings over 10 years experience in sports leadership and management. Between 2004 and 2006 Matt worked as International Program Coordinator for Eurotech International Sports Group based in Washington D.C. Matt holds a Masters degree in Sports Management and a bachelor's degree in Sports and Exercise Science. Currently, Matt serves as the Norcal Region 3/4 U8 Development Program coordinator.

Played on the Washington Youth State and Region IV ODP Teams throughout High School. Full scholarship athlete to Pac-10 school, Oregon State University from 2004-2008. Played on Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2008 USL-1 Champions.

Favorite Soccer Memory:

Playing against and beating one of my childhood hero's, David Beckham, in a 2-1 defeat against L.A. Galaxy at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton - the stadium was packed with more than 37,000 fans and it was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life!

Soccer Playing History:

College and Post College

Megan walked on to the Cal Division 1 Varsity soccer team as a Defender, playing with Olympians Alex Morgan (USA) and Betsy Hassett (New Zealand), as well as many other US, Danish, and Icelandic national team players During her time at Cal, the team was consistently ranked in top 20 in the nation and made it to the NCAA Play-offs each year

  •  Megan was named in the 2010 Cal Invitational All-Tournament Team

Megan has also played Semi-professionally in the W-League for LA Premier FC  and in the WPSL for the San Francisco Nighthawks.

High School Soccer

Megan played for Hart High School in Southern California and was elected the best midfielder in 2007, the best defender in 2008 and the most valuable player in 2010 on her prep squad. Megan was also named to the 2008, 2009, and 2010 All-Foothill League teams and was a four-year starter and two-time captain, taking the team to the CIF semifinals in 2008 and quarterfinals in 2009, and second round in 2010. Megan was namesd the 2009-10 CIF female student-athlete of the year

Club Soccer

As a youth soccer player Megan played for Valley United Soccer Club, a Premier team in Coast Soccer League.The teams was a two-time national cup semifinalist, 2008 coast soccer league cup champions and 2007 Surf Cup semifinalists. During her time the team won over 25 other tournaments across the nation over the course of their 6 years together, becoming one of the most succesful teams in club history. The team was coach by Coached by Hugh Donald, previous UCLA Assistant Coach.

Soccer Coaching History:

  • Coached Cal Residential Soccer Camps during summer 2011.
  • Volunteer coached for ABSC in 2012
  • Has coached for Mavericks since 2015, assisting Robert Sackey with the Girls United 98 and Girls 02 Black team, and head coaching Girls 02 Blue, Girls 06 Blue, and Girls 06 Black teams.

Education Background:

Valedictorian of her graduating high school class with a 4.84 cumulative GPA.
Attended Cal as a Regents and Chancellor's scholar and graduated with a Bachelor's in Integrative Biology.
Studied Pierce's disease in grape crops as an undergraduate researcher
Studied lizard birth patterns and genetic mutations in Mexico as a post-graduate field and lab researcher.
Currently works for the California Environmental Protection Agency's Department of Toxic Substances Control as an Environmental Scientist and Project Manager.

Favorite Soccer Memory:

One of the best memories was the bond she formed with her club teammates - the same core group of 13 girls and coach played together for 6 years. All the traveling, winning (and losing), and goofing off were the best soccer experiences Megan had, and she hopes to create that same environment for all the players that come through the Mavericks soccer program.

Soccer Playing History:

As a soccer player Zuly played for Mavericks (1999-2005), DVSC under World Cup player Sissi De Amor (2005-2007), Bay Oaks (2007-2008).  She then went on to play college soccer at Cal State East Bay (2009-13).

Soccer Coaching History:

Current head coach at St. Mary’s college High School. Also coached at Hercules high school and U16 boys at American Canyon soccer club 2015-2019. 

Education Background:

Bachelors Degree In kinesiology, athletic training from Cal State East Bay.

Outside of Mavericks:

Zuly works for Sport Recruiting USA helping student athletes achieve their dreams of playing at the next level. 

Favorite Soccer Memory:

My favorite soccer memory is scoring against Cal State LA my senior year to tie the game.

Soccer Playing History:

John started playing soccer as a young kid in Ethiopia.  He played Club soccer from U11 - U18 in Minnesota.  And had 3 year varsity starter for Johnson A. Johnson High School.  He then went on to play 4 years of College Soccer at Goshen College, in addition to running Track & Cross Country.

Soccer Coaching History:

John got into coaching during his college years by getting involved with recreation youth teams, which sparked his coaching journey.  Since 2007 he's been coaching various age groups and levels, both girls and boys teams, from U10-U16 at Club level in Indiana, Minnesota & California.
He has also coached JV HS girls and boys team at Mounds View High School as well as being part of the coaching staff as an assistant coach for the Women’s team at his Alma Mater Goshen College.  John currently holds the national E License and the Fiorentina Method Coach Certificate.

John is a College Financial Coach at Moneythink. And outside of soccer, is really passionate about education access and supporting young people through the complex process, so they can successful pursue their chosen pathways.

Favorite Soccer Memory:

As a player my best memory is playing at the College level and winning out against Bethel College (conference Rivals) when they were ranked nationally.
As a fan of the game my best memory is going to Anfield, seeing the stadium and being part of the Anfield faithful crowd! #YNWA

Soccer Playing History

Played youth soccer from ages 12 to 17 year old in a local club in Rio de Janeiro. taking part in many regional tournaments and cups. My best achievement was winning the BRHAMACuP playing in the U14 team, one of the most highly regards regional cups in Rio de Janeiro.

Soccer Coaching History

Diogo began coaching as an Assistant coach in the U18 category of Madureira Soccer Club, a professional team from Rio de Janeiro that plays the 1st State Division and the 4th National Division.

From 2007 to 2009 Diogo worked as the Head Coach of the boy’s U11 and U15 teams in a state government project for underprivileged children in Rio de Janerio. Participating in regional and state tournaments

Between 2006 to 2015 as a P.E. Teacher, Diogo coached indoor soccer to kids in Elementary and Middle School.

In 2016 Diogo joined Mavericks Soccer Club as a head coach and strength and conditioning trainer.

Favorite Soccer Memory

When I as an Assistant Coach, the Madureira S.C. played against the Women National team and the U18 boy’s national team in the Brazilian Training center in Rio de Janeiro. The atmosphere was amazing. We won the first game and tied the second one.

Soccer Playing History: Born and raised in Greece, and started playing in the streets. Moved into the academy of the local team Doxa Dramas. Came to UCD and played briefly on the sophomore team and have not stopped playing since. Currently, play on an over 40's bohemians team in the East Bay league alongside playing pick up soccer 3 to 4 times a week.

Soccer Coaching History:  Began coaching in 2000 and have coached continually ever since. Recently Nasos was involved with the U19s boy's teams but the last 2 years Nasos has been coaching at Mavericks Soccer Club.

Soccer Coaching License: Currently holds the F and E licenses. Nasos has taken numerous coaching seminars locally and in Greece including the Fiorentina and Barcelona methods of coaching.

Educational Background: BA in Economics at UCD my MS in Applied Economist from UCBerkeley and SFSU and close to completing his thesis For my Ph.D.

Favorite Soccer Memory: I  remember when we won the regional title in Greece and got my first trophy And when I broke my wrist rolling over the goalkeeper trying to score a goal.

JT Thomas played collegiate soccer at UC Berkeley.  She went on to earn her earn her MA in Education from Stanford and spent many years as teacher, coach and athletic director at Punahou School (HI) and Incline High School (Lake Tahoe).

JT returned to Berkeley to become the assistant coach for the CAL Women’s Soccer Team for eleven seasons.  At that time, she also coached the U21 Women’s Regional Team, worked many Olympic Development Program Camps, and was the color commentator for local broadcasts of the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays.  JT holds a USSF “A” License.

After “retiring” from the college game, JT became the college counselor at Maybeck High School in Berkeley.

Robert Sackey holds a class ’A’ coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation and a CAF B license from the Confederation of African Football.  Coach Sackey a regular participant in CYSA-North programs.

He has been coaching and developing soccer programs in the Bay Area for 21 years, has been a CYSA Staff coach for over 10 years, and has attended several international coaching workshops and courses.  He is the Technical Director for the Mavericks Soccer Club.

Coach Sackey started the El Cerrito Girl’s Soccer program and was their Head Coach for 13 years, served as Head Coach for Head-Royce Boys and Girls Soccer teams for 9 years, and coached the San Francisco Nighthawks (a woman’s semi-pro team) for 4 years.  He worked as a Team Scout and Technical Advisor for Ghana Women’s National team, the Black Queens, in the 2003 World Cup, U.S.A, and for Ghana Men’s National team, the Black Stars in the 2006 World Cup, Germany.  Coach Sackey continues to support the development of soccer in his native Ghana through his nonprofit organization, Sabisoccer Academy, and frequently brings coaches and players to Ghana to work with youth soccer players.

In October of 2011 Coach Sackey was selected to become Head Coach for Ghana’s U20 Women’s National Soccer Team, the Black Princesses. The team went through the CAF World Cup Qualifying Series, which brought them to Namibia, South Africa, and Tunisia, and were able to win all of their qualifying games with a 6-0 record. The team qualified for the U20 Women’s World Cup in Japan in September 2012.

Robert has coached numerous Mavericks teams, has taken teams from lower flights to top flights and developed them to play at the highest level of competition in soccer in California.

Danny spent 2005 through 2008 coaching and training youth soccer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  His U.S. soccer coaching experience includes eight years as a women’s college coach, eight years as high school coach, and more than a decade of experience as a coach/trainer at the Division 1 youth club level.  Danny’s playing experience includes varsity soccer at Chico State University as well as becoming a professional player.

Danny "has the passion for the development of players and teams, by creating a caring, positive, and respectful environment."

Danny holds an E/D coaching license as well as numerous other coaching and training certifications.

Jesus (Chuy) Garcia started playing soccer with El Cerrito Soccer Club at the age of five. He tried out for the U10 Mavericks Traviesos, and played with the Mavericks for seven years.  He also played for El Cerrito High School on their Varsity team for three years, earning First Team All League his Senior year.  Chuy played collegiate soccer at Merritt College. He enjoys playing soccer as well as coaching the game, and wants his players to enjoy and love the game.

Soccer Playing History: I played varsity for 4 years in Bakersfield, 2 years at Bakersfield Jr. College and finished at Cal State East Bay.

Soccer Coaching History: 5 years coaching in a competitive soccer program and going on my 4th year coaching at Mavericks Soccer Club.

Education Background: I graduated from Cal State Easy Bay in 2011 with a BA in Sociology and recently completed my Multi-Subject Credential Program and received a Masters in Education at National University.

Favorite Soccer memory: My favorite soccer memory was when I was 16 years old and went to Sweden to play in the Gothia Cup. We played teams from all around the world and took 5th place out of 80 teams.
